Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
